Influenza ID
| IVD Device and System Design
CHALLENGE
Non- acute flu emergency testing in clinics and hospitals delay treatment of acute patients. Over the counter influenza tests are not available for long- term care facilities or home use.
SOLUTION
Influenza ID is a handheld, battery operated product designed for clinic and field testing of Influenza type A and type B. Influenza ID performs over the counter testing in homes, clinics, and nursing homes.
User Centred Design
At the early stages of product innovation, we worked together with an R&D startup to visualize and envision what a new IVD system for clinical and field use would look like.
Collaborating with our clients, clinicians and users, we extracted user insights to develop data driven UX/UI solutions. We designed the following usability features from qualitative and quantitative research data at the generative product development phase.

Product Design of Influenza ID Instrument

Influenza ID is designed with a central device port for ambidextrous use, and has a universal glyph menu within the touchscreen user interface. The product form fits within the palm while having the stability required for stable table top use. A sequential navigation UI was designed to prevent errors such as missed steps and/or misuse.
DESIGN FOR MANUFACTURING
We design for manufacturing, even at early product innovation stages. Both instrument and device were designed with dimensions compatible to injection molding and assembly processes. We also developed a system for managing product design drawings, simplifying subsequent quality management audits.
